Spring In Vancouver

This is officially the most spectacular time of year in Vancouver, and it would be pretty tough for anywhere to top it.  The cherry blossom trees are in full bloom, the tulips are out, the grass is lush - it’s perfect! Check out these photos on Flickr.

The Grocery Store Bum

This week, Cedar pulled a beauty in the local IGA with Lisa.  As she
passed by the deli, she yanked down her pants and ran away yelling,
“Look at my bum! Look at my bum! Look at my bum!”  The deli counter
staff were highly amused.

Idiot Drivers

A first: today Cedar chastised me for calling a driver an idiot.   This is the conversation:

"Daddy, why do you call some cars idiots and some cars not idiots?"
"Because some people are very bad drivers."
"But they’re people, not idiots.  It’s not nice to call people idiots because they’re people."

Hmph.

F*** Easter!

I don’t know why I find this so funny, but we took a picture of Cedar before the big egg hunt and she was so excited she couldn’t stand still.  This pose has her quite randomly giving the finger to the camera, while wearing bunny ears and holding a basket.  She’s a real sweetie.

Egg Hunt 2006!

For the last three years, we’ve been invited to an amazing kids Easter Egg Hunt at Jennifer Hamilton’s cottage, just over the U.S. border.  They hide eggs all over their yard and the kids go nuts.  As you can see, everything starts off calm and friendly (Cedar with Jasper and Piper Hamilton…), but then quickly descends into the manic frenzy of chocolate fever that overcomes children on Easter Sunday…

Cedar: Gifted Artist

Cedar has recently learned how to draw faces and while we were on the phone with my parents tonight, she decided to draw ‘Kooky’ (aka Courtney, her grandfather).  The result is quite eerily accurate: especially the minimalist hairdo.  Compare for yourself…

Dawson Crawls (And Sits!)

Major milestones tonight!

Dawson crawled a few small, tentative ’steps’ forward tonight before
collapsing in a heap.  He’s been shoving himself around our hardwood
floors backwards on his stomach like some sort of beached seal lately,
so getting up on his knees and moving forward is a lovely surprise.

Then, mere moments after his inaugural crawl, we turned around and
he was sitting up.  First time for putting himself into a sit all on
his own, too.

I’m predicted that tomorrow, he will say, “Dada” and by the end of the week, he’ll be shaving.

Parenting Failure Alert!

Two quotes from Cedar today that paint a disturbing picture of life in our home:

1. "Holy Christ, I can’t even read my book around here!"
2. "Tell me the story about the Berenstain Bears pooping on the grass."

For the record, Cedar is three years old.

Also for the record, I accept no responsibility for any of this.  None.

Fun With Photobooth

My parents just got a Mac laptop with a webcam built into the monitor.  It has a piece of software called Photobooth that lets you snap pics and, as an added perk, distort the hell out of them for fun.  After we had a couple of drinks, we tried it out and came up with these…  I’m sure they’ll end up as a powerful bribery tool someday.

What’s In A Name?

I’m concerned that as we continue through the no sleep / teething phase of his childhood that Dawson will grow up believing that his name is not, in fact, Dawson, but rather “Shut up” or “Go To Sleep, You Little Turd!”   Is that wrong?
