Maui Trip

We’re in Maui for a week and so far, 2 days in, it’s spectacular.  Not going to spend a lot of time on here, but wanted to post some pics.  They’re are a lot on Flickr, so check them out here.

Good news  - for those who know me, there are LOTS of pictures of waves hitting rocks like this…

Weekend at Buccaneer Bay

It’s not often you can take off for 2 1/2 days and REALLY forget everything else, REALLY relax,  REALLY recharge your batteries.  Just returned from doing exactly that at Buccaneer Bay on the Sunshine Coast of B.C.  My cousin, Claire Wood, invited us up to her cottage for the weekend with her other cousin, Bryan, and friend, Blair - it was spectacular.  Phenomenal weather, gorgeous scenery, and great company.  Pretty tough to beat. I don’t think I’ve ever seen Cedar have so much fun in a weekend - on Sunday alone, she went in th ocean for five swims. Instead of rambling on, here’s a few pics of the highlights.  See a full slideshow on Flickr here.

Gorgeous Lake Louise

We took a pit-stop at Lake Louise on the final leg to Banff today and it was just spectacular.  There was a 2km hike to the end of the lake that we did with the kids - maybe a wee bit too long in retrospect (Cedar had to take a dump in the woods…) - but the views made up for the screaming on the way back.  The colour of the water was mind-boggling.

Flooding In Banff

I’m going to the NextMedia conference in Banff this weekend, so Lisa and I decided to make a family road trip out of it.  We drove through loads of flooding, including fully submerged pickup trucks on farms in Golden, B.C., but the most amazing stuff was in Banff itself.  Bow Falls is at its highest levels in years and the power and speed of the water was mind-boggling.  Half the waterfront of the town is cordoned off and sandbagged, too.  Hope things stay dry this weekend…

Woo Hoo Whistler!

One of my Christmas gifts from the Maggot was a day at Whistler, so my dad and I went up to hit the slopes on Thursday.  It was amazing and we had a little bit of everything - warm and sunny, windy and cold, powder, packed runs, clear panoramic view and total white-outs.  Made me realize how little I’ve exercised since the kids have been born and remember how much fun snowboarding can be.

I’m Elite! I’m Elite! Wheee!

I tell ya, I’m really stepping up in the world.  For the first time, I’ve reached “Elite” Aeroplan status (could that sound more obnoxious and arrogant?) because I’ve been traveling so much.

Today, I had my first flight as an elite member of airplane society.  ZIP!  I whisked up an elevator and into the Maple Leaf Lounge, where I wolfed back cookies and had a leisurely rum and coke while checking my email on a free high-speed wireless connection.  It’s like another planet up there!  There are leather chairs all over the place, window screens, mood lighting, self-serve bars, free magazines and newspapers, a salad bar, big screen TVs, and a world class trendy toilet.

I hate to say it, but it’s very nice and makes me reluctant to think about flying another airline while I’ve got access to the lounge.  I’d had a few bad Air Canada flights lately and was strongly considering just booking everything in the future on West Jet.  Ummm, might have to delay that for a bit now… (could I be more shallow and pathetic? Wait – don’t answer that…)

Camping and Photos

We went camping this past weekend to Lac-Le-Jeune (just off the Coquihalla between Merritt and Kamloops) with our good friends Sara and Craig Nakamoto.

We had lots of fun and our kids played really well together, but for me, the most fun of the trip was geeking out snapping pics with Craig.  Craig is an excellent photographer who’s always trying out cool new shots, and it was inspiring.

However, when we got around a campfire one night, it became a TOTAL nerdfest with time-lapse exposures, weird angles, and flashlights.  Here’s a couple of my pics - Craig’s are even better on his own site.

Camping Trip - Food Oddities

File this under ‘overkill’.  Two couples going camping and we decide beforehand that we’re going to eat hot dogs and canned beans for dinner on Saturday night.  We show up and we’ve brought THREE different kinds of hot dogs to cater to every health choice: regular hot dogs for me, nitrate free all-beef hot dogs for the partially health conscious, and tofu dogs for the health nuts.  We cooked them all in the same pot, cut them up into three little piles, and made two entirely separate batchs of beans and wieners.  I can understand being health conscious about some meals, but if you’re eating beans and wieners off a camping stove?

Camping Trip - Packing Disaster

So we had our first two-kid camping trip and while the weekend was awesome, our packing skills were not.  First up, Dawson had NO shoes at all.  For camping.  So our 10 month old had bare feet and/or socks in a rocky, wet, and muddy campground for three days. Our best solution was to tie plastic bags around his feet - he looked like a tiny hobo. Sweet.

As soon as we showed up and set up the tent, it began to rain torrentially.  That’s when we realized that we forgot all our rain gear at home.  Awesome.

At bedtime, we discovered that no one had brought pillows.  (I had a severe neck cramp for two days, but unfortunately, we forgot to pack advil!)

In the middle of night, it became clear that we didn’t bring enough warm sleeping gear - we checked the forecast in Kamloops, which is only 40km from our Lac-Le-Jeune campground, but what the weather doesn’t tell you is that Kamloops is in a desert-like valley, while Lac-Le-Jeune is up in the mountains.  At night, it went down to near freezing.  I know, because I was partially frozen all night.

Lesson learned - make a list before you leave!  (Oops - we did that and still forgot everything…)

Now I’m not one to lay blame, but all of this is entirely the Maggot’s fault. :-)
